“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin

Here is your fourth reading assignment: “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. Chopin is a well-known 19th century southern writer, who took on feminist themes in her novel The Awakening. In this smart, moving and much shorter piece, Chopin examines how marriage, no matter how loving, can still become a prison for women.

The comments are due by Tuesday, november 18th.

  1. I really like this story. The wife is receiving news about her dead husband and she is sad for a moment and cries, but later she starts saying free a lot. towards the end i got the perception that she was happy that he was gone. When the husband arrives he gets news that she has passed from a heart disease that came from joy. This whole time everyone though that he has died because of a recent accident but he was not near it he had no knowledge of what had occurred. I really find it interesting that the wife didn't seem to react to that fact that her husband was "dead" as many believed she was more focused on that they had a lot of issues and that she was free.

  2. After I read the story, in the end I got a bit confused when they said the wife had died of a heart attack. All along I thought the husband was dead. I had to reread the whole story again to fully understand the concept of it. Her sister told her news about the Husband which he was far from the scene of the accident. He didn't know there was one. But before she went downstairs she was up in a room. She was happy. She felt free from her husband and couldn't stop repeating the words "free, free, free!"

  3. When you are in a relationship sometimes you can completely lose yourself in the other person. Especially being married, you have taken the responsibility to take care of another person, "to live for someone other than yourself," but in this case, when you don't love that someone, you can start to feel trapped. The duties that you've vowed to do, becomes routinely, exhausting, and forceful. The way Mrs. Mallard described the feeling of freedom was like she rose from a long paralyzing death, it's sad to see that sometimes we as women won't fight for ourselves, to continue in a situation that will slowly take away every bit of us until there is nothing left, to give complete surrender to a person. But we have to remember, we don't have to stay in these situations, we have the right to be happy and live for ourselves, and that it is okay to feel this way.

  4. I think this story was very interesting. From what I understood, Mrs. Mallard felt some type of relief that her husband was gone. At times, being in a relationship can be draining. I'm sure being married is way worse. She repeats "Free" a lot and she even thought to herself that she would be living for herself now. I believe that when you spend time with someone for a very long time you can grow tired of them and you can even be unhappy. At the end of the story, it says that she died of a heart attack. The story doesn't necessarily give any further explanations but I think it was because she had already began to picture a new stress-free life, that when she saw her husband it kind of made her sick. Its sad when you begin to feel like this towards someone you're supposed to love. As a woman though, we have to stand up for ourselves in a relationship. Some men think that they are always right or that the opinion of a women doesn't matter. That is wrong and we have to love ourselves first. A man that treats us that way doesn't love us. Maybe Mr. Mallard wasn't a bad husband, but Mrs. Mallard was clearly tired of him and of the life they shared.

  5. While this story is confusing, i understood it. Mrs.Mallard was deceived into thinking her husband was dead, and so she goes into her room to be alone. Although she is truly saddened by his death, she realizes that she is finally free. When her sister finally gets her to go downstairs, her husband walks in, she sees him and suddenly dies of a heart disease. I think that this story is sad and depressing.

  6. This was a very interesting story. When Mrs.Mallard heard the news of her husband Brentley's death, she was overwhelm with grief. However, she eventually came to terms with his death knowing that she was relieve of the responsibilities of a wife. Sometimes in a marriage we as women tend to loose our identity. Now she is ready to live and live freely for herself. Consequently that joy was short lived when Mr. Mallard entered through the front door of their home. Mrs. Mallard died from a heart disease but she died a happy woman.......

  7. This story I found very interesting and confusing at first. I had to read it a couple of times until I finally came to the conclusion that Mrs. Mallard was upset and yet she was a happy that her husband was dead. I think that marriage is considered an important concept where you have love for someone else and you know that your house feels the same way for you too. In this story it showed how she was relieved that her husband passed. In addition, when she found out he was still alive, she was the one that passed because of how she took the news hat he was never dead. I believe that Ms. Mallard was unhappy in her marriage and its not explained why she was still with Mr. Mallard all that time and waited until he passed to feel happy. I do wonder what caused her to have a heart disease but at least her husband saw her for a last time and she died feeling happy and joyful.

  8. I like this story a lot, it touches on something that I always find to be an interesting them in writing, that being all the extra feeling besides grief that one experiences surrounding another persons death. Mrs.Mallard initially is hit with waves of grief over her husbands death but on reflection realizes that her life may be better without her husband. Initially she tries to deny herself these feeling but is overcome with joy at the prospect of a life without her husband. Death being such a typically taboo subject I find it interesting that Chopin chose to take this point of view on the matter.

  9. the story is interesting but at the same time confusing. what i understood is that Mrs.Marrard felt trap in a relationship with her husband and at the moment when she found out that her husband was death she got sad but then she realize that finally she was free from him. Sometimes people does not realize that they are unhappy with their "love ones" until sometime happens that makes them realize the unhappy life they were living or in some cases they realize when they already waste the majority part of their life with that person.

  10. This story was strangely shocking and entertaining. The language was very emotional, almost like a song. The way the reader beings to figure out what is happening is very interesting, you really had to pay attention and be able to connect from sentence to sentence, as each sentence was loaded with hints, details and descriptions.
The reading gave a view of loss that was unexpected. Loss can be gain for some. The whole reading was quite powerful, but the ending in particular was both powerful and comical at the same time. This woman has come to such a great and liberating turn of fate just to have it taken away and she actually drops dead from the sight of her husband. I was left with my jaw open. It caused me to feel so sorry for her, and made me think of how most people believe you have to get married in order to be happy, but in fact this is not true. It reminded me to enjoy singleness, and not to want something I don't have but to enjoy where I am now.

  11. I enjoyed reading this story very much, once I started to read I was immediately hooked. In the beginning of the story I had this thought that she was going to die, but the way she had died was pretty shocking. I like how the authors text was quite complicated yet easy to read to the point that even if you don't understand the definition for a specific word, you can still kind of get the sense of what it means just by reading everything else. If that makes sense. In the comments Kristen states that, "The language was very emotional, almost like a song." I completely agree with her. When reading the story I felt like I was reading lyrics to a song. Lastly what shocked me the most was the fact that the husband was never killed, nor did he know about the incident. I hope there will be more stories to read similar to this.

  12. As I read the story i noticed i have read this somewhere before but could only recall the ending so that wasn't as shocking to me, but what shocked me was as she goes in her room her mood so quickly changes. I find it really funny how she gets over her husband's death so quickly, i understand that she has a heart problem and that she might not live long but still its way to quick. I think the tenth paragraph was really funny because to me it sounded like she was gonna masterbate, i could be wrong to assume this but thats how it sounded to "free,
free, free!" lol, I also think that she didn't really die out of joy more like sadness that her just found freedom was taken away.

  13. This was such a very detailed and very interesting story. When i first started reading it and i heard that her husband had died, i had a feeling she would either kill herself or have a heart attack because of her heart disease. At first though i thought she would have jumped out the window because of the so descriptive details of her opening her arms out to the window and such. But overall was such a different story to read then the others we have been reading. I really enjoyed reading it despite its sad ending.

  14. The format used by the author exaggerates all the metaphors and descriptions used. This text is meant to tell the story of a couples emotions when one dies. Although a reader is supposed to find that sad the author uses a twist into showing the true definitions of death and how it can also be a good and happy thing. By making the story a good thing it may remove the effects of the reader becoming sad or emotionless because it is now a happy ending so what the author does is including the usage of description. On paragraph 10 when said “The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body." is a great example of the author using description. She analyzes the senses the characters feel to the point where us readers can feel it too, she simply words the feeling within the story into ways where us readers have no questioning ... this also helps her readers visually mentally and physically understand the story clearly.

  15. This story was kind of confusing and sad. It seems that Mrs.Marrard was in a unhealthy marriage with her husband. She wasn't sadden by her husbands death because she got over it quickly like she imagined life without him before the news. I guess her finding out her husband isn't actually dead is what triggered her heart attack.

  16. I took this as anyone can view it, not just through a woman's prospective. Many people are gonna be attached to their loved ones even after death. As for Mrs. Mallard she only tried to seek a way to escape this pain she felt, and only came to finally being free, and independent. This was her only escape. Unlike some people I don't believe they had a bad relationship, as she seems to have a hard time with the death, and describes how he was to her. To also back this up she died from a heart attack from joy and happiness soon after her husband was shown to be okay and not dead. Again, I can see many people going through this and not just women.

  17. In the story "The Story of An Hour" by Kate Chopin, it takes places in the time period of 1894. During this time period women who were married were housewives. Divorces did not happen either in this time period. Mrs.Mallard at the time of her husbands death reacted normally which was in despair and in tears. Once the first reaction of her husbands death has surpassed she began to see the bigger picture. For the first time in her life she was a free women and can finally be her. I found this to be a sad story. Mrs.Mallard already was a sick women dealing with heart issues and once she found out she would be a free women finally, her hopes and dreams were all taken away in a instant when she found out her husband was actually alive after all. The husband is now going to grieve on his now dead wife.

  18. This story was very interesting but also very confusing at the same time. After reading the story twice I was able to understand the story fully. Mrs.Mallard received bad news about an accident her husband was in which resulted in his death. When first receiving the news she was heartbroken. Soon she realized the good things that came out of his death, like the freedom she now has. She would now live a stress free life and wouldn't have to deal with the responsibilities of a wife. She soon cheered up but then her husband walked in and she had an heart attack due to excitement and joy. Although she had mixed emotions and was sad he died then was happy, seeing him brought her joy. Unfortunately this caused a heart attack and she passed away. This story was interesting because it shows how relationships often has ups and downs and can bring alot of stress, but in the end she still was excited to see her husband.

  19. This story was sad to me. It was about a woman who had a heart attack from the news that her husband had died in a train accident. She was already afflicted with heart trouble so in hearing the news it was overwhelming. In my opinion she was not too happy with the marriage nor was she very fond of her husband. The news of her husband appeared to give her a form of relief. She thought of the days to come that would bring her joy. She would be free to live her own life and not for her husband. Her husband’s death feed her. She was able to live again and rejoice. Consequently, in living again and being free she gave her last breath and died. She died happy!!

  21. Somehow when I was in the middle of the story I knew what the outcome was going to be. I don't remember if it was either my mom or my grandma who told me this story a few years ago. The point is, everyone thought that Mrs. Mallard was going to be shocked when hearing the news that her husband had died. But it went the other way around. She realized that she was finally free. Unfortunately it was all a misunderstanding, the husband did not die and due to that she was the one who ended up dying, So after all she did become free. Very ironic how everyone thought the heart attack was of happiness.

  22. I had to read this story twice to somewhat understand the concept of it. The wife is almost sadden and joyful at the same time. It seems to me that she (like in every marriage) managed to explain brief advantages and disadvantages of losing her husband. She was very sad in the beginning but something in the atmosphere outside the window made her realize that there is life after death. By her dying at the end it kind of made me think of certain cases in which one spouse dies and the other follows right after due to the disconnect of an amazing bond. It the total opposite because the husband survived and she kicked the bucket. I'm still confused by this story. The author made it very descriptive and I'm a big fan of that.

  23. When I first started reading this story I got confused and so I had to read it again. Mrs.Mallard found out that her husband had died due to a accident. As many of us thought that she would be sad and whatnot she wasn't which surprised me. She was actually happy that her husband died. Every relationship/marriage has their ups and downs and some overcome the situation and others don't. I mean why stay with a person that makes you feel unhappy. She kept mentioning the word "free" as in free women, she didn't have no responsibility as a wife anymore. She suffered with heart problems before. One day her husband walks in and she knew from there that "free" was gone but at the same time she felt happy to see him, to see that he was still alive. Unfortunately Mrs.Mallard died due to a heart attack. This story was good a little bit confusing but I eventually understand it.

  24. What Kate Chopin is trying to convey in the story "The Story of an Hour" is how the death of a loved one could have many different interpretations on how people live with grief and it is handled respectively. That is what Mrs. Millard experienced when her husband died of a train accident. She was unhappy and depressed about her current life. Isolating herself from family and friends in order for her to embrace the freedom she once had. However, as time goes by Mrs. Millard's life was then cut short because of a heart attack and she was smiling. Perhaps that was the freedom she was searching for all these years. Knowing the pain of other people is only half the battle. My thoughts on the story is that depression could prevent anyone who is struggling to move on his/her life. To me it was a the most devastating stories I've ever read as a student. All Mrs, Millard wanted was freedom but her death prevented her from enjoying that freedom. It is an unfortunate and tragic experience she had to endure.

  25. This story is very ironic
At first I think anyone who has had a family member who passed away is very hard. A lot of emotions and feelings that you never felt before start to appear.
Well the wife was sad but then she realize she was finally free of her husband. What's ironic was that he never died but when she saw him alive she died of a Hearst attack of pure joy now that's ironic.

    1. I agree with adrian on this ironic issue because in reality we do not love an honor our love ones until they are really gone. thats when we realize how important the individual was to us. When the wife realized her husband was still alive, if i was in her position I believe everyone would go into shook, because since when did the dead ever come back alive?

  26. I like how Chopin wrote this short story. It gives the reader a sense of confusion. “The story of an hour” is a story of a failed marriage. It is about an unhappy wife, Mrs. Mallard who suffers from heart disease. She was saddened by the false news of the husband passing but in the end realized that she is no longer chained in her marriage. She then celebrated her freedom but her happiness caused her own life. What a very interesting story this is. It gives us a picture of reality that not all marriages are successful. Some marriages fail for reasons that only the husband and wife know.

  27. Sometimes in a relationship you tend to forget yourself and care for others. Mrs Mallard did just that. after all her husband died which was so hard for her to accepted. her marriage just failed apart. while she was ready to enjoy her freedom, she have this deadly disease that causes her death. i was so suprissed about her death. may her soul rest in peace.

    1. I feel as if she was in a relationship and was craving for freedom she should of did something for her relationship, her waiting for his death to feel free even though she just thought he was dead when in reality she wasn't "free" he was still alive goes to show a death isn't the answer and her deadly disease is what actually was her true freedom.

  29. The story was really interesting. After Mrs. Mallard’s husband’s death, she felt kind of lonely but she felt that she was finally free. She was keep on using the words like “open window” and “free” after she heard that her husband passed away. She realized that her life may be better now since there is no one to be on her way when she wants to do certain things. Many women are not happy in their marriage lives, all they search for is freedom. However, when she saw her husband coming back, she was shocked to see her freedom's death which caused her to die in a heart attack.

    1. I agree with Musfika. Her description of the joy that crept into her mind was extremely detailed. She was sad about hearing the news but little by little she realized she was free from whatever bad situation she was in with her husband. The ending caught me by surprise. Seeing that her freedom was being ripped from her grasp must have triggered her heart attack. The author said she died of, "the joy that kills". I interpret that to be that type of joy that when taken from you abruptly causes you to die.

  30. The story is awesome. I believe the wife was faking the whole part about being sad for the death of her husband. She must have had a horrible marriage for being excited to be free from marriage. She couldn't have told anyone the truth due to the era of the story. In those times, marriage was forever.. I guess the last laugh goes to her karma. She must have been so disappointed to see her husband alive that she just dies of shock....

  31. I believe that, one of the saddest part in a relationship is when someone lost themselves into their partner and feels like Mr.s Mallard. It is awful when someone finds themselves sad in their relationship. You are not supposed to feel trapped in a relationship, not when you used to have feeling or love that person but as time passes by, feelings change. Therefore I believe if someone is feeling that way in their relationship, they should think for themselves and leave their partner, in order for them to be happy otherwise you will be trapped into a relationship you don't want and you will lose yourself. You don't have to wait for a event to happen in order for you to get out of that relationship like Mrs.Mallard. She was happy that her husband died because finally she was free from an unwanted relationship or in in this case commitment. So I believe this story try to tell us that we should know when is enough from a relationship and don't wait until something happens in order to take action.

  33. I found this story to be kind of interesting because when she found out of her husbands death she was hurt and as she went on thinking about it she found joy out of it because she actually free. Its kinda ironic cause you would think she wouldn't find joy out of her husband death unless she didn't love but she did and its crazy that this joy she got of her husband death is the joy that killed her.

  34. This story had a very melancholy tone to it. From the start, we find out that Mr. Mallard had been killed in a train accident, which in it of itself is tragic. We then learn that his wife needs to be told delicately about his passing because of a heart condition. Of course, I immediately thought something was going to happen when she heard of his death....that she was going to become ill due to the stress. Instead, it's like a moment of clarity comes over her as she realizes she has been granted a certain freedom in light of becoming a widow. I guess in the time this was written a certain oppression came along with getting married. I believe that today, for most women, there is more equality in marriage. If I were being restricted in my freedoms by a man I loved I think I too would be looking for some escape. Her reaction to his death may seem a bit selfish and cold, but i see some truth to it. What's more shocking to the reader is her reaction to the news of her husbands "resurrection" if you will. The shock and surprise of learning that he was alive and well was apparently enough to send her to an untimely end.

  35. Having a good marriage is very difficult because the couple faces problems such as different manners and habits. Some couples can manage these things and have a happy marriage, but in some marriages one of the partners makes all the decisions and the other only obeys. I think that Mrs. Mallard has this type of marriage, so when her husband died she felt free. Now, she feels like she finally owns her life. This story reflected very well how people feel after no longer being oppressed.

  36. This story is really cool. It showed how marry women feel like they are trapped in the marriage and when she found out that her husband passed away she felt free. We know that because she says "when she went to the room nobody follow her" and also she mention open window meaning freedom.Marriage is not suppose to feel like your trapped , you suppose to feel in love and what to be together . Sometimes we just need a break from each other , to keep the relationship healthy .

  37. Mrs. Mallard just hearing the news of her husband's death is baffled, she remembers just seeing her husband. The news seems to be hard for her to accept and she seems to almost reject the news. She seems to have almost mixed feelings of love and now being free. She seems confused as to if she should be feeling these emotions. It seems that her husband was imposing on her during their marriage which leads her to feel that way.

  38. I think that i've read this somewhere before and kind of knew what was going to happen at the end. Mrs.Mallard was sad because her husband died but at the same time she was happy because she's going to be free. I think that they have ups and downs in their marriage. Mrs.Mallard has some kind of mixed emotions, I think that there's a little bit of love but at the same time there's an oppression with their relationship. At the end of the story, I think that her joy is that she was looking for another chapter of her life where she could be more free of herself but at the end, what kills her is the dream of not being free anymore when he saw her husband alive. That's why it's called-a joy that kills.

  39. It's a sad story.Even though a few fellow classmates say that her reaction was a bit of rejection,I try to put my self in her position,so i can understand better, the situation.Marriage is supposed to make you feel good, not feel trapped.Every marriage has it's good&bad moments, but if you feel that you've been trapped then it's bad.Maybe Mrs. Mallard's husband's death, was a relief to her, that now she's is free, but what this story teaches me(something i've never imagined in my life) is that there's people at out there, like this lady, who have been married for years, but find "relief" "freedom" with such tragic events!.

  40. I believe that at the end Mrs. Mallard got what she wanted, which was being free. Knowing that her husband died brought sadness to her but also great relief because she was going to be able to live for herself. Her marriage seemed as if she gave all of her dedication and time to her husband and that may have caused her to feel as if she was living up to his expectations. Having in mind a new life, a new beginning, a new chance at everything and then realizing that it's all going back to how it used to be scared her to her death. Now she is "free" because she doesn't have to deal with her husband ever again.

  41. I found it strange that Mrs. Mallard was so happy about her husbands apparent death. The relief she received makes it seems like the marriage wasn't right for her. But at least now she believes she is free to live her life completely the way she wants to. Maybe she is just trying to look at it the most positive way she can, as it is the death of her dear husband.

  42. When I read this story the first time I got a bit confused but as I read it over for the 2nd time everything made more sense. Mrs. Mallard received bad news that her husband had past way. She got very sad and cried. But after that she started realizing that she's more happy and free without him. She's able to live the life she wanted until she saw him again. Then the "freedom" that she thought she had was no longer there and she ended up dying from a heart disease. I feel that many marriages have struggles but a person who is unhappy in there relationship can lead to what Mrs. Mallard felt. She was happy and free knowing that she no longer has to suffer. Which is unhealth in a relationship. You shouldn't be with someone your not happy with.

  43. This story didn't make no sense to me because I can't tell whether it a story that somebody is telling or if she really died. At first I thought she really felt sad that her husband died but it the other way around which make me think this women is a physico path. How can you say your free? Which make me clueless unless he was mistreating her so it wouldn't be no point of crying when she heard that her husband died. I believe she medical attention with her brain.

  44. I can already feel the complexity of these readings growing. in this story i found a true fact of life that death can come around any corner and affect us in diff ways. the fact that she had just seen her husband and suddenly he is dead is actually not uncommon. The feeling is so relatable to many and its so unreal. almost as if it were a bad joke. but this makes for a great story.

  45. When I read the beginning of the story, I think this may be a sad story of a pitiful widow because Mrs. Mallard lost her husband by accident and also she has a heart disease. I think she will be struggling for life with no one she can depend on. However, in the middle of the story, Mrs. Mallard shows not sad but feeling free in life. I’m surprised what she thinks. Because of that, I can feel strained relations with Mrs. Mallard between her husband, and it is also the most woefully part of this story. In real life, marriage is a important part. However, many couples are struggling on marriage. Many people think the marriage like a cage to limit their freedom. They are hard to work at the marriage. In my opinion, marriage is the beautiful part in life, this story can make people think deeply it, also reminds people should work carefully at their marriage. Don’t make marriage—the happy part becomes your sad part.

  46. The story for me was very interesting and filled with emotions. In marriage we tend to loose ourselves and forget how to be happy. in this story Mrs.Mallard heard the news of her husband's death, she felt weird all these mixtures of feeling. she then thought that with his death she had this sort of relieve and she didn't have the responsibilities of a wife and being his wife. She felt good in a way that she didn't know how to express it but that joy was stopped when her husband entered through the door Mrs. Mallard died from a heart disease. But she died happy, relieved, and a free woman.

  47. This was an interesting story because for most widows they would weep for a while, but Mrs. Mallard found a certain freedom out of it all, which helps her revive. She begins to plan how she will act at the funeral because she was his wife and she’s suppose to be the most hurt but she knew he loved her and they lived a great life together. She felt a sense of excitement about it all, maybe because now she could make her own decisions or not feel any type of obligations for anyone else. She loved her husband and always will but now she is focused how liberated it make her feel and how she will live her life in peace and happiness knowing her husband has always loved her and would want her to be happy. Everyone should have the same attitude as Mrs. Mallard. She took a negative thing that happened in her life and changed into something positive and a certain type of motivation to live life even more and fully in the way she has always wanted to.

  48. I enjoyed this story the most out of all the stories we have read. When one dies, it's expected for a person to be sad and grieve and for a while mrs. Mallard is but she soon realizes that she's happy. She's finally "free" as she states in the story. Although she loved her husband, I think it's sad to think that. I believe the ending is a bit ironic, because she is the one who ends up dying from realizing that her husband actually isn't dead.

  49. Marriage is not happiness. Some people are living their worse days in the marriage. this lady perhaps has been suffered from the husband treatment and wanted to live alone for the rest of her days. By dint of waiting for the husband's death, she end up with the cardiac arrest which leads her to death.

  50. This story is mainly about how her husband died and what I thought was interesting was how quick she was told. Birds and music where playing and the fresh smell of rain fell. Even though her husband died at the end she seemed to calm down as getting over a loved one dying is very hard.

  51. This story really got me thinking about how much the death of a loved one can affect you. We never think it could happen to us but when it does all the things they’ve done in the past doesn’t matter. In our minds we replace our thoughts of how they were and now remember them only as perfect people. Then we act as if life can’t go on. The feelings we are left with are so crippling we think life isn’t worth living. Years can past but feelings will all ways remain the same.

  52. The story "The Story of an Hour", by Kate Chopin represents a negative view of marriage by presenting the reader with a woman who is clearly overjoyed that her husbad has died. Chopin describes Mrs Mallard's emotions as she swings between her numbness and her extreme joy at her newfound freedom. I think the story, basically, shows a woman has a deep inner life that is not connected to the outside of the world rather than her husband. In reality, she convents herself in her room to discuss her feelings are being important by the situation where she feels herself being freed.

  53. This story is a nice emotional flip floping story of a sick person whose small joy gives her enough strength to live a little more. However, there is no wife who will be happy about her husband's death news. In this case, it is acceptinal and I see the most perfect choice to be happy in that state of mind. Therefore, I believe it is such a influencing and heart touching story.

  54. When receiving the new, the wife was heartbroken as any wife would've been. Her sadness for her husbands death was very detailed which made you feel the sadness as well. While she's by herself, she realizes how free she is now. She had a moment of clarity, an epiphany. She finds a new happiness in herself, something that only herself can do. However, her husband didn't pass away and came home and found out that she had passed away from a heart attack from being to happy. She was basically happy from something that was untrue and ended up dying from it.

  55. I thought this story was confusing so i had to go back and read the story again. I think that in this story she was happy that her husband died, that's why she kept on repeating "free body, free soul" and when she saw him at the front door she didn't die of happiness. Maybe she was in a abusive relationship and that's why she was happy, because she was free from him and his abuse. This story is confusing.

  56. This story really puzzled my mind, I had to read it at least 3 times to get a slight understanding from the story. I felt like the moral of the story was don't take life or people for granted, cause only when they're are gone is when you'll really appreciate there presence.

  57. The death of a loved one is never easy I have learned this from personal experience, when my father passed away my mother went through a terrible case of a broken heart and was torn to the littlest form of herself. It was hard on me but she lost the other half of herself and can never get him back, It seems like when someone that you love is torn away from you, you are not able to function correctly. I guess that is how Mrs. Mallard felt when losing her husband.

  58. I have read this story before in my English class in high school. It is one of my favorite stories. I always wondered if it was the joy of seeing her husband alive or the sadness of her husband not being dead. The reason that I question why she passed away is because throughout the story she repeatedly mentioned the word "free" after finding out the death of her husband.
