The last reading assignment for the semester is Anton Chekhov's "The Looking Glass.” Chekov's short piece tell the story of Nellie, a young girl, who looks into a mirror and sees her future, which involves a desperate, hopeless attempt to save her husband from typhus. The story shows the battle between a young girl who believes in the power of love even while coming up against the harsh realities of life — the surprise ending shows how quickly those realities can be forgotten.

"The Looking Glass" by Anton Chekov
It is a very compelling story that challenges the very concept of reality in general. When a person believes in something deeply enough, it could change an unavoidable outcome to a point where it is nonexistent. To me that is what Nellie is experiencing when she strongly wished for her husband's illness to disappear. However, it is also important to acknowledge that sometimes life could take a different turn depending on the seriousness of any situation because life is unpredictable and nobody know what might happen next. To be fair it is admirable that a person like Nellie would dedicate her time and love to her husband and that is what is most "human" about this story.
ReplyDeleteThe story given between Nellie and her passionate love for her husband is a great example of the quote " if you look deep enough into a problem you will always find one." Nellie's husband is ill and Nellie wished so hard upon the idea that his illness will just go away creating the story stronger and stronger causing readers to think to rely on the idea that his illness doesn't even exist. towards the end of the story the looking glass was used as a object to reveal a "dream" and reality. when she notices is and looks through it she notices a different view in which doesn't match what she has been seeing this results to her coming to reality and noticing that everything she thought was just fiction and all a dream.
ReplyDeleteIn this story Nellie had a "manifest dream." She wanted so badly to be married that she dreamt her entire life as a wife and a mom before it even happen. In the perception of Nellie's dream she had an undying love for her husband, that she went the extra mile to seek help for him after he was found suffering from a deadly illness. When it came clear to Nellie that her husband would possibly face death, she came face to face with the reality of being on her own taking care of the kids, and even losing their home. This was a very strong perception of the imaginary, however Nellie was soon awaken from her dream and back to reality. Sometimes we want something so bad, that we compel it into existence.........
ReplyDeleteI didn't enjoy the story much, I felt there was no true meaning to the work as a whole or a main purpose to it. Just me. From what I understand, I assume she dreamt of her finally being married, but ultimately suffering with the harsh reality that things can go wrong. At last she finally wakes up and notices she was dreaming/daydreaming and she carries on like nothing happened. They got me lost and confused at that point, and just saw no point in this.
ReplyDeleteWhat got from this story was that a women wanted a marriage so bad that she dream about it and it was so real to her. I believe when you have those type of dreams it comes true. I feel like you seeing the future because it was that real. When you want something so bad and you get it, something can go wrong or cause an effect. That why in my case I don't really want something I just go with the flow in life.Wait for it to happen and don't over think it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Nellie sees her despaired soul in this looking glass, always looking for more in her life she begins to hallucinate all of the joys that could be a reality in her life. She is looking through the looking glass as a sense of hope to find true love and happiness but she gets more than what she bargains for when she realizes the responsibility of being in love, when she wakes up at the end and realizes that it was nothing more but a dream she is relieved because she realizes that her life is perfect the way it is, Loveless.
ReplyDeleteThe story talks the Nellie’s dream of her life after marriage. She hopes have a beautiful marriage. However, her husband is ill. The life is not always nice like her wishes. I thing some details on the beginning and the end in the story with each other to show different dream and reality, such as “grey background” appears many times in the story, and the end of the story “grey background” is disappeared that separates the reality and the dream, and also shows Nellie’s emotion coloring. In addition, the appearance description of Nellie makes me can feel her emotion changes as well. I like the conversation between the characters in the story because I can feel Nellie how anxious about her husband’s illness, which shows Nellie look forward to nice marriage badly. In my personal opinion, author uses looking-glass to be a clue takes readers come in Nellie’s dream makes me feel into another space—future world. Even Nellie may not have same life like dream that makes her deep considering and prepares for her future life, same like us. Sometimes people look forward one thing badly will make them find out new things, or some details in life which is omitted by them. We can learn from it to plan better life.
ReplyDeleteMuch like every girl Nellie dreams of marriage and future. The whole time she is dreaming of her life after marriage. She hopes have a beautiful marriage. However, her husband is sick and on the verge of dying. She constantly asks the doctor to help her but he is also sick. Towards the middle and the end of the grey background. towards the end of the story the grey background starts to fade more and more little by little and it ends completely goes away. It signifies reality and the dream. As it disappears its her in reality and she is relived to know that it was all a dream. She wants to be married and have a happy nice and a life without despair or so much affliction. She wanted a beautiful life so much that she had a realistic dream about it she couldn't tell reality from a dream. I liked this story because it shows that when you want something, it sometimes doesn't come out the way we expected.
ReplyDeletei think this not a good story because life is not meanong of thinkness
Deletei think this not a good story because life is not meanong of thinkness
DeleteThe story was quite difficult for me to understand, however it was very interesting. Nellie dreamed about her husband, about how perfect life would be with a husband. It was Nellie's dream to get married one day, and all her other dreams would come true. However we can see in the story her husband has fallen ill. The doctor cannot help her husband, this is Nellies worst nightmare. Nelli thought all her dreams would come true if she got married, but she never thought of how it would end. Nelli had to burry her dead husband, which she thought would make all her dreams come true. This story showed a cruel reality to me, by how Nelli's savor, her husband, was her worst nightmare in the end.
ReplyDeleteNellie Dreamed about being in love and getting married one day. Looking at her marriage in the future she see's happiness and joy. As she keeps looking through the glass that happiness comes to an end. Her husband gets very sick and is close to dying. This shows her the reality of life and love.
ReplyDeleteIn the story, Nellie’s dream was to get married one day. She thought that after getting married all of her other dreams would come true. However throughout the story her husband becomes ill. This was Nellie’s worst nightmare since not even the doctor could her husband. She automatically thought all her dreams would come to an end, since she thought all her dreams would come true after she got married. This scenario showed Nellie the reality of life and love in a very drastic circumstance.
ReplyDeleteThis story talks about how fate can crush one's dreams. Things happen throughout life and changes occur. As a person you could run from death but in the end you will meet your demise. Instead of being in a plastic bubble just live life to the fullest. In my opinion this is the message that the story is trying to convey.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, when we are the happiest we've ever been, we wonder what comes after. We start to create negative scenarios in our head because we believe too much good, always follows with something bad. But the truth is, we have to accept our happiness and our future more often. Believe that everyone has their own journey and shouldn't be afraid of it, because in the end, everything happens for a reason. In this case, Nellie got what she wanted most, a husband to love, and a life with love. I believe that sometimes when we reach the point of happiness, we're afraid of having everything taken away or fall apart, we start to overthink things, and when we overthink, those ideas follow us in our sleep, and into our dreams. But like the ending, reality will always bring you back from your head, and worrying is just a temporary feeling.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the story Nelly had hope that when she get married she was going to find happiness, love and a beautiful life next to her husband but when she got marry she realize that everything she was dreaming about were just dreams. the person that she taught was going to make her dreams a reality instead became her nightmare.
ReplyDeleteAt first when reading the story I thought of the grey dark background Nellie explained was her becoming blind because she dream of this big happy family and husband and as she described the face and certain things in such description thought that what was stopping her happiness was being blind but reading the story furthermore she was dreaming of this big happiness in life but it was but was her worries that took all reality of her future she was able to see but not actually on how life can have so much worry but only last for such time and when she woke up it was a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteI didn't enjoy reading this story as much as other stories. I was lost in many places while reading. However, I believe this story is talking about a girl named Nellie and how she always dreams about happiness and to get married. She thinks that after marriage, her every dream will come true. She was dreaming big of happiness but dream goes away when she opens her eyes. After marriage when her husband gets sick, she was having the worst nightmare. She comes to reality from her own dream world and realizes that reality doesn't always match with our dreams. Even though the story was kind of confused, I can relate to it. One of my friend always talks about how she will do/ achieve something in future. When she doesn't achieve something she always dreamed about, she gets really frustrated. Therefore, we have to keep in our mind that we have to control our dreams because reality is different from our dreams.
ReplyDeleteAt first i didn't understand this story at all, until further reading i realized that it is about a married woman that fell asleep and had a dark dream about her husband dying of typhus. The doctor that she goes to also has typhus, but she forces him to her home to cure her husband without caring about the doctors well beings. When she gets to her home she leaves the doctor on her sofa to go check on her husband, but when she goes back to the doctor he is lying down just as sick as her husband, and now everyone is helpless. She then awakens and is relieved that it was just a nightmare. This story shows how a woman was brought back to reality just by having a nightmare, and sometimes dreams are just dreams.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that this story was a bit confusing. After reading it the first time, I understood it is about a woman who wants to get married,I actually had to go back again and again to understand the meaning because i got lost while reading the text. The story is about Nellie,a young girl who loved her husband deep.To me,it seemed, that Nelie was a very anxious person, the author used a very "attention notice" language using many exclamation marks on her speech.I have to agree with my fellow classmate Musfika Supti that when we dream about something and want something a lot and don't get it,we get frustrated.I believe this is because we expect alot from others and we have a big ego, which blocks the truth from being visible.Having a big ego with lots of trust to Your self, can be bad, because if You never reach Your goal and Your dreams never come true, then You get hurt and frustrated,I'm not saying You shouldn't trust Your self,I'm saying that being overconfident(i've been there too) might hurt you a lot.
ReplyDeleteA very dark story indeed!! I take it that the story was taking place in the late 19th century enviroment. During those times, there were no medication to cure such diseases like we have today. I like the story because it shows the reality of horrors during that time without medication. It's unlikely that I would dream about having smallpox or any old disease today. We are lucky that medication and science has come a long way. Too bad we can't control our dreams yet.I was glad it was just a dream.
ReplyDeleteThe story begins with a little girl called "Ellie" that loves staring through a looking glass thinking of the future. She feels that she's living in the future and that everything is how she planned out. However she starts imagining that her husband is dying of Typhus. She suffers because she does not want to see her husband die before her. At the end she realizes she has been looking at the glass therefore she is relieved. I think that Anton Chekhov's purpose is to let people know that nothing is perfect, not even dreams.
ReplyDeleteAnton Checkov's story " The Looking Glass" is interesting at the very least because it's a story of a "young and pretty girl" dreaming a day and night of being married. Obsessed with the thought of marriage, Nellie, the daughter of landowner, constantly dreams day and night about the time when she will finally be wed. It is about looking glass that so vividly, she begins to visualize her future life being played out in the reflection of her looking glass. She sees her husband ill with typhus and runs to the doctor, himself sick and delirius with the disease and begs him to come to treat her husband. However, he can not and she laments her fate with both doctor and her husban's illness. According to the story, she seems waking up with her daydreaming about her future all the time. As we know dreams are not real but we sometimes believe it. Sometimes we surprised with it. Last week I had a dream that someone died back in my country and I cried and teared at night. I really don't remember, and hurriedly, next morning, called my mother and she said " nothing happened, you had bad dreams". I think it is common to have dreams , but sometimes we have bad dreams .
ReplyDeleteNellie was describing her version of a partner and it seemed to make her happy. With happiness also comes saddens so I think the nightmare became that shed of light of the darker parts of having a husband. The risk that one runs when we invest our emotions for the concern of another persons well-being. I believe that dreams all have some kind of explanation to them and/or they relate to the certain situations that are currently happening to us. Nightmare can be quite scary but can also represent the concerns and fears of our daily lives.
ReplyDeleteNellie is a young pretty girl that dreams day and night of being married. She dreams about a man she hopes to be with one day. Her imagination and wish to be married shows how afraid she is to see her imaginary husband die. To me this story seemed to show how sometimes there is no reason to have hope. We all hope that life will get better and we will be happy for the rest of our lives. We are constantly worried about choosing the right path to lead us to the life we dream of, but death always waits. All the worries, concerns, fear, pain and stress we go through we all end in death. But no matter what we still stand behind what we believe in or those we love no matter how painful, stressful, or how fearful we are because we still have hope that things will end how we dreamt of it just as Nellie did with her imaginary husband.
ReplyDeleteI should be laughing because everything was just a dream. In which Nellie hopes and dreams to get married with a man at first, but she ended up having a nightmare. In the end she was glad to be woken up from that nightmare. Therefore maybe Nellie doesn't want to have that real life experience as she had in her nightmare. Always remember that life is not easy and people that surround you will eventually die. Life is not a fairy tale and we should all be prepared to face many obstacles that are to come. (Adrian Castro)
ReplyDeleteIt was just a dream! I think everyone has had dreams where they feel so real. Waking up and asking yourself, did that really happen? There are also dreams that make you appreciate what you do have like health and family. In Nellie's case her dream took her away from a sadness to a bliss environment. Some dreams you wish you didn't have to wake up from.....
ReplyDeleteThe article just screamed with suspense from the very beginning, I knew the story would end with someone realizing they were dreaming or hallucinating. a question that's running through my head is what lead to dreaming of her husband ill? I knew from the moment she started looking into the water reflection this was gonna be some twisted story of love.
ReplyDeleteThis article was very interesting. Nellie, like everybody had dreams and hopes. I believe that this story was trying to show that dreams and reality are two different things. You can dream of having so many things but it all depends on reality.
ReplyDeleteThis article was very good as I was reading it. Is like when you have a dream and hopes that it's reality. That's what's Nelly had dream like every dreamed about beautiful things. Her destined one was for Nellie everything, that significance of life, personal happiness, career". It's mean that all she wants for Nellie is to have a wonderful life. Some people dream of having everything in this world to make them feel better. However , in reality it was jus a dream.
ReplyDeleteThe story was a little confusing but after I read it twice it was more understandable. It was just a dream !! what a dream !! I believe everyone once in their life has had a dream that feels so real that for a moment you really think is real. That's the magic of dreams. Nellie always dreamed about being married and then after she had a dream of how the person you love dies, it made her change her mind about it. I agree with Adrian Castro that life is not a fairy tale and we should all be prepared to face many obstacles that are to come, that is the reality of life.
ReplyDeleteThe story talks about how Nellie dreams of her destined one but faces with the life of reality. I think that everyone has dreams of having a good life but in reality we strive hard to get what we really wanted. Having a good life means that we get something that we already have but in reality there are many obstacles we need to face. One could have everything that the've wanted but it could also disappear in a glimpse because you could never know what the future is. For example, as Nellie dreams of her husband being in a fairytale ,he got sick and dies, that's why I think that everyone in this world could have everything but also will be missing something because life is never fair, we always have to face reality.
ReplyDeleteIn this story although it was only a dream lessons should be learned that we should not be so self centered that we forget to look at the whole picture. When the Doctor instructed Nellie to contact the other doctor she should have listened. Nonetheless, she didn't. In my opinion he also needed care.If she have listened then the doctor would have been able to help her husband and the doctor. Instead in haste she proceed home to the aid of her husband not thinking how could this doctor help her husband when he too was ill. She dismissed the consequences of her poor judgement and just thought about herself. Consequently, I was comforted by the fact that it was only a dream because she would have had two ill people to deal with. one she could have avoided and the other had she taken advice could have sort help. So lessons learned. If a person is willing to point you in the right direction go for it.Don't waste time
ReplyDeleteThis short story was a little more confusing for me. It makes me think about how people become so driven by emotion and we dont always make the best decisions. I was stricken by the era and what people had to endure for those they loved. It made me appreciate the train as much as I do not enjoy it sometimes it is a luxury. I found it so funny how she didnt listen to the doctor. He obviously was in no condition to help and her reason flew out the window.
ReplyDeleteI was touched by the recollection of her family, I felt compassion toward her suffering. I think overall this reading is a reminder that we all die and to love those around you very well.
Nellie dreams to get married with a handsome man, but she has a nightmare where her husband suffer from typhus. She goes to the doctor to help her husband, but the doctor is sick too. In the end of the dream her husband dead and she feels so sad. This story teaches us that live are not easy because we always should face with many problems which can change our point of view about our perception.
ReplyDeleteI liked how descriptive the narrative was. I also enjoyed how persistent Nellie was to bring a doctor back to her house to tend to her dying husband. It showed that no matter what obstacles may be in your way, if you persist, somehow there will be a way. Even though she thought that finally her husband would get the treatment he needed only to have the original doctor be too ill to help, she tried again by going to see the other doctor. When someone is in love there are no lengths too far as to which someone will go for the person they are in love with.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would want the looking glass she owned. A fine line can be walked between perception and reality when one is yearning for a life they want so badly. I think people daydream often...of being famous...of doing something to change the world...but quickly enough are pulled back into the real world. If someone is desperate enough to see an entire lifetime which doesn't exist there may be cause for concern...especially when that lifetime has such tragedy and heartache involved. Nellie may want to break a few more "looking glasses" before committing to the one that broke.
ReplyDeleteThis story shows us how people focused on emotions and make decisions from it . and we could see is not always good . she wanted to marry handsome man but she have a dream that he got sick and died . and then she change her decisions . And she was self center wen the doctor told her to call the other doctor and she didn't . If she would listing to the doctor and get her husband not sick and not have him home and take care of him by herself maybe he wouldn't die.
ReplyDeleteI like how descriptive the author was and the this short story is definitely different then the others we have read. But this short story shows us how there is a a large gap between what we want and what we need. What we want isn't always whats best for us.Nellie had that dream for a reason so she would come to her senses about the type of man she wanted to marry. Overall its a great short story a touch of romance is always nice.
ReplyDeleteThis story was very interesting to read and at first I did not understand how she was asleep and then was running to the doctor to help her ill husband. In the end I understood it was all a dream. I see that this story tries to help the reader understand that sometimes we have dreams and believe that our life will always have a happy ending. Ever since I was a kid, I was always influenced by fairy tales and how every girl can find their prince charming and live happily ever after. In this story the author shows how Nellie is a girl who also dreams of being married but when she actually dreams or rather looks at the looking glass, she lives life of sadness and illness because her husband was ill. This proves how even fairy tales or dreams can have their sad moment sand not everything is happiness. We must all face happy and sad moments in life and Nellie understood that in her dream and now she will learn that marriage is not always full of happiness but also moments of sadness. She will understand that in the future its not what we want to happen but rather be prepared of what may happen. I like this story very much because of the lesson it taught me. Great story.
ReplyDeleteI felt this is an interesting story where a girl of a landlord and general on new year's eve dreams like every other day of being married. However, this time she was caught up with tragic and sorrowful dream until the glass fell down. Unlike every other day, Nellie saw a diiferent phase in life; hardship, struggle and sorrow which are also a chapter of life people faces thorugh. I like her enthusiasm on marriage, husband and kids each day but this particular dream must have shocked her and gained some knowledge about reality.
ReplyDeleteNellie's dream of getting a husband was enough to make her live her whole life just by looking through the glass. She has this whole dream of what it would be like to be married. But it all took a turn for the worse when her husband became I'll. Nellie does everything she can to help her dying husband but the doctor is also dying. She ends up waking up and is relieved that it was just a dream, which is ironic. Her thoughts were just her daydreaming which actually turned into a dream that felt realistic.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this i took some time to gather my thoughts, and build my perspective. The symbolism is so strong here that it almost escapes the reader in a sense. One can read this and see a tragic story. However, when i read this i gathered more of an empowerment for Nellie. She grasped that life will not always hand her everything she wants, it will come with its fair share of trials and tribulations. But i believe that it isnt about how you fall but how you deal with the fall. Do you get up and tred on or will you lose hope and be defeated?
ReplyDeleteThis story was very interesting. At first it was a bit confusing but I soon realized Nellies dream of having a husband. The story shows that all of us have dreams and Nellies was to have a husband. She looks into a glass and sees that when she does have a husband she isnt happy shes rather upset and ill due to the fact that her husband is ill. The story teaches a lesson that what we always wish for isnt always something we need. Nellie always dreamed of and wished of having a husband but instead realizes that the man she wanted didnt make her happy. Instead upset and ill. Overall this story was very interesting.

ReplyDeleteThis story is about a wife that will go to any level to get his husband to be healthy. She beg the doctor when she traveled a lot of miles. even when the doctor was sick as well she was persistent and made him come to the house. But all of this was a bad dream that she was having. I can relate to this when I have to make a difficult decision in my life and I don't know if its going to be good or bad. Like the story Nellie was so happy when she realized it was all a dream. She was suffering way to much in her dream.
ReplyDeleteThis story was interesting. The looking-glass allowed the character Nellie to see her future. Not only did she see her future but she seen the future of what she really wanted: to be married. In her future her husband was very ill and she wanted the doctor to save her husband. However, the doctor was coming down with the same illness and soon enough it was too late, as her husband took the turn for the worst and passed. As the character returned to consciousness she believed she was dreaming. I must say, if the looking-glass was real and could really tell the future I would look into it. I would want to know what the future has in store for me.
ReplyDeleteThe story was interesting however i that mirror were real i wouldn't look into it to see my future.
DeleteNellie is able to get a glimpse of what her future will look like and now it's up to her to decide what she'll want to do in her life. Throughout the story, Nellie is hopeful that her husband will be saved but reality proves her wrong when the doctor becomes ill as well. Nellie reflects on what her future will be if her husband does not survive. The story delivers several messages about hope, reality and the future. Oftentimes we are so caught up with what we want that we forget that life is all about the unexpected things that occur to us. However through it all, we must remain hopeful.
ReplyDeleteI liked how descriptive the dialict was I felt when she was talking i could picture about what she was talking about in my head. I also found it interesting how she was dreaming but she was really looking into her future which is cool that could happen to her.
ReplyDeleteThe story was very interesting, I enjoyed how descriptive the story was because I was able to imagine every detail in my mind. It is interesting that she was able to see her future because now she is able to change what she did not like and have the perfect life later on. I agree with Kristie Saunders that the story has various messages such as hope, reality and future. I could imagine Nellie's desperate need of a doctor. I have experienced something similar. It sucks to have to depend on someone else that does not want or can not help your situation. It is a horrible feeling of anxiety.
ReplyDeleteI agree with steven when he said he believe that Nellie sees her despaired soul in this looking glass, always looking for more in her life she begins to have a negative impact on all he positive stuff that can happen in her life. She is looking through the looking glass as a sense of hope to find true love and happiness but she gets more than what she wishes for when she realizes the responsibility of being in love, when she wakes up at the end and realizes that it was nothing more but a dream and reality hits her when she that her life is perfect the way it is
ReplyDeleteThis story was interseting cause it showed the ends that one will go through when faced with a desperate situation and for the ones we love when our life's stability is threatened. Nellie feels responsible for her husbands illness because she foresaw it and feels a responsibility to help him. Nellie willingly risks her own health and the health of the only person who can help her husband. the language used helps exemplify the desperation one would when in the same kind of situation that Nellie is in
ReplyDeleteIn this short story I really like the description of of the setting. To me it was beautiful, the word that were used made the setting seem really dark which I like a lot. The story it self seemed really dark and sad which i can't sat i really like but as i kept reading l ended up really liking it because of the ending because it made me question my self that if it was all her dream or she went crazy after the death of her husband. I am confused
ReplyDeleteThis story began to be complex. It was hard to understand at first but little by little it became much clearer. While reading the story I imagined it would be based in the late 1800's/ early 1900's. When I noticed the Doctor began to lay down repeatedly, it made me think he actually died. The story has a gothic tone to it and it seems as if in the end everything was all a dream.
ReplyDeletein the beginning i didn't understand the story until the end i realized she was dreaming the whole basically about her future with her husband and children. i think it's always nice to dream about the future and have such thoughts. i actually liked the story once i got to understand it in the end

ReplyDeleteI didnt understand this story at first but then i realized that this story shows that dreams and reality are two different thing and if you keep on focusing on your dreams then you will confuse the two and mix dreams and reality
ReplyDeleteI actually liked this story, I read it a few times to understand it completely. I love how she was dreaming her future with her husband and kids. I have had similar dreams of future me, so oddly I understand what shes feeling. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was how the story was narrated in a dark tone.
ReplyDeleteits kind of nice story, well described
